Hearing loss is an
invisible disorder.
Ever so slowly, a person's hearing ability can
diminish and the sounds that were once so much a part of
daily life can be come faded and no longer recognizable.
This not only interferes with daily communication with loved
ones and friends, but with safety as well.
Approximately twenty one million Americans, infants,
children, adults, and senior citizens have a hearing
impairment in one or both ears. Some never suspect a
problem. Others seek treatment so that they can begin to her
more clearly or find better ways of coping with the loss.
Some children may have delayed speech and language due to
their hearing loss. Many people accept their hearing
impairment as an inevitable part of aging, or pull away from
social interactions. However, we are fortunate to live at a
time when advanced technology offers so many options for
hearing aid assistance. We find that even people who
previously could not obtain benefit from hearing aids, are
now very successful with them.

The three types of
hearing loss:
Conductive
A conductive loss is a problem in the outer or
middle ear. It may be improved by either medicine or
surgery. If you have a conductive hearing loss, you will be
referred for otologic consultation. If surgery is not an
option for this loss, hearing aid consultation and fitting
may be indicated.
Sensori-neural
A sensori-neural hearing loss is one where damage
is located in the inner ear. It may not be improved by
either medicine and/or surgery. The nerves for hearing have
been damaged and because of that, sound is distorted. More
than half of the adults 65 years of age or older, have this
type of hearing loss. Some children have this type of
hearing loss due to problems at birth, illnesses, very high
fevers, or heredity.
There are a few exceptions to the rule that nerve damage is
untreatable. A sudden idiopathic hearing loss should be
evaluated by an otolaryngolist. Sometimes, with treatment,
hearing can improve. In addition, some patients with
Meniere's syndrome may be helped by medical
intervention.
Most patients who have a sensori-neural hearing loss can
obtain great benefit from the wonderful hearing aids we
currently able to use. Even people who were previously
unable to obtain help often are very successful due to the
new digital and programmable technology.
Mixed
A mixed hearing loss is one where there is a
problem in the outer or middle ear and the inner ear. It has
both conductive and sensori-neural components. Some of the
hearing loss may be helped by medical intervention, but
there will be some nerve damage remaining even after the
conductive component is corrected. Depending on the etiology
and extent of loss after treatment, patients with this
hearing loss can also obtain significant benefit from the
use of hearing aids.
At Diagnostic Services of Houston/Houston Hearing, we
will evaluate your hearing with accurate, diagnostic tests
to determine the extent and type of loss. If you have a
hearing loss that may need medical consultation or
intervention, you will be referred to a physician for
medical evaluation. However, you have a hearing loss that is
permanent and unable to be corrected medically, hearing aids
may be the only choice for improved hearing.
If hearing aids are recommended, it will be our mission to
provide both you and your family with the support you need
to adjust to your loss. We will explain how to deal with
difficult listening situations, and provide the best hearing
aid selection and fitting for you, so that you will be able
